As for the town being infected with a disease like Coyotito is, it's not meant to be literal, it's a metaphor for how greed and selfishness is spreading throuh the town like a disease on a person. Greed and selfishness spreads from person to person like a virus spreads from cell to cell. That is what happened to the townspeople when news spread of the pearl.

extra credit post: summary
In the beginning of the story, Kino wakes up and gazes around the room, first at his baby, Coyotito, then at his wife lying next to him. Juana and Kino are listening to a song in their heads, and they refer to it as the "Family Song". They end up having to go to a doctor because Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. Sadly, the rich doctor refuses them because of financial reasons and probably because the other patient that he was attending to was of higher social status. Kino punches at the gate in frustration until his knuckles are bloody. In chapter 2 the story is based around the searching and discovery of a valuable pearl. Juana and Kino both paddle out to sea and Kino dives into the water to gather oyster shells. After two minutes he returns with many shells in hand, but there is this one which is very large and has a ghostly glow. It also appears that Coyotito is improving in health just by being in it's presence. Kino screams in excitement which arouses a lot of attention from the surrounding boats. As Kino and Juana enter the town, rumor of the pearl has already spread throughout the small town. Even the doctor that turned them away is very interested about the pearl. Kino however has big plans for his new found wealth, including sending Coyotito to a school. It is at this point in the book where I believe Kino's greed is taking over the originally planned use for the pearl, which is to heal his baby boy. When the doctor pays Kino a visit to check on his baby, he claims that his condition is worsening so he needs to give him a capsule. However after the capsule was given, Coyotito began to seem more ill. That night in fear of someone stealing the pearl, he decides to hide the pearl where the three of them sleep. When someone tried to steal the pearl that night, Kino got into a fight with the man but he got away. When kino and Juana are preparing to sell the pearl, they worry about being cheated because of their lack of knowledge about the worth of the pearl. Kino is angry at the offers the appraisers offered to him. He decides that he is going to sell the pearl at the capital in hope of getting a better deal. Even though he was assaulted and warned by Tomas about going to the capital, he is still adament about his plans. During the middle of the night, Juana tries to get rid of the pearl in the ocean, but Kino follows her, takes back the pearl, and leaves her beaten on the shore. On the way home, Kino is attacked and hurt, but he manages to kill a man. Because of this, their family is forced to flee. There house is on fire and after that many people believe that they are dead, but they are actually hiding out at Tomas's house. They fail in their first attempt, but they eventually escape under the darkness of night. Kino lies to Juana about a disturbing image he sees in the pearl. He actually sees a bloody body, a swollen faced Coyotito, and a sad Juana walking home. There is a very tense moment during the story when three searchmen are approaching them. they are hiding in some brush, and they get very close to them, but they get lucky. Kino makes the flee up the hillside because knows that the men will be back once more to search. During the night Kino tells Juana that she must go to anear town and hide out. In order to stay hidden in the dark, Kino strips down and starts to approach the three campers. He charges the campsite where he kills all three of them. Unknown to Kino, one of the shots fired of hit Coyotito, which had killed him. Completely devastated, Kino and Juana walk into town with Coyotito wrapped up un a blanket over Juana's shoulder. Finally, Kino hurls the pearl into the ocean.

discussion question ch.1-2.
"Compare Kino's and Juana's reaction to the scorpion": Juana reacted in screaming and fear of her baby. She reacted just as any other mother would. Kino on the other hand reacted by calmly trying to get in between the little baby and the scorpion. Even though he was still afraid of the situation he knew he had to take the responsibility of being the man of the house and try to solve the problem.
